A fun little track meet to test your foot speed at the start of the summer. Participants can run the 1-mile (1600 meter) individual race , the 2-mile (3200 meter) individual race, and/or the 4-person team relay race (4x800 meter). Relay teams are selected at random, so there is no need to form a team before the race. You may end up on a team with the 3 fastest runners...or the 3 slowest....its the luck of the draw, and that's what makes it so much fun!WHEN: Wednesday, June 15. The gallery is managed by one of the many artists who live in St. Anne's Hill....For more than 17 years, the K12 Gallery for Young People has helped kids grow from creating stick figures, to still lifes, to designing large-scale murals. Now the gallery itself is growing. The current 3,000-square-foot gallery on Third Street is expanding; knocking down an 18-inch brick wall has added 2,500 square feet.
We needed $20,000,” said K12 founder and executive director Jerri Stanard.
“I helped Jerri type up the original grant request for K12. She is a great friend, and has managed K12 so well,” Janet Shuff said.
“The gallery has grown from an idea to this big business that serves the community in a unique way.”
As the major contributors, the Shuffs received naming rights for the new space. Thus, TEJAS (Teen Educational and Joint Adult Studio) was born.
“What Jerri’s doing at K12 is a wonderful thing. She manages the artistic and business end of it beautifully,” Shuff said. “She has such a heart for kids.”

In 17th century England, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. Those who belonged to such an organization were called "Odd Fellows"...
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on the North American Continent in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819 when Thomas Wildey and four members of the Order from England instituted Washington Lodge No. 1.By 1861, there were over 200,000 Oddfellows across 42 states, according to Wildey's biography. So that leads us to wonder when they came to the Dayton area. The "Special Collections" archives at Wright State University Library has extensive files documenting Dayton's history, including our own St. Anne's Hill Historic Society archives.

DAYTON — The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission said it will administer a $1.5 million federal economic stimulus job-training grant that will pay for work by various organizations to dismantle old, vacant houses.
East End Community Services, PowerNet, Architectural Reclamation Co., St. Vincent de Paul and Dayton Works Plus LLC are involved in a partnership effort to dismantle the vacant homes.
Congrats to the community leaders who make these projects happen. More good news is on the way!The cities of Dayton, Kettering and Fairborn along with Montgomery County and the Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority jointly applied for the Neighborhood Stabilization II funds to finance purchase of foreclosed homes for either demolition or rehab.
The goal is getting properties back on the housing market, Sorrell said. The award will address approximately 1,000 structures with work expected to get underway by late February.
Dayton neighborhoods likely impacted by the grant are Santa Clara; a swath of houses west of Main Street in the 45406 ZIP code; the Greater Inner West area, Westwood, Twin Towers, Walnut Hills, Linden Heights and Inner East.

Stivers honored by U.S. News & World Report for second year Dayton high school for the arts among best in America for 2010
Stivers School for the Arts ranks among America’s best public high schools for the second year in a row and has moved up from bronze to silver, according to U.S. News & World Report in a study released Dec. 9.
“It’s wonderful news,” Dayton Public Schools Superintendent Kurt Stanic said. “Principal Erin Dooley, her staff, students, parents and the seedling Foundation are to be commended for their work.” Dooley, who heard the news from a parent as the school day began, was taken by surprise, but cited arts integration as one of the many factors she believes contributes to effective teaching and learning at Stivers.
“Our arts program provides opportunities for students to be creative, to be expressive, to pursue their passion, and to develop the whole person. That has a major impact on learning,” Dooley said.
The Dayton high school, located at 1313 E. Fifth St., is the only school in Montgomery County to receive the national honor this year and is one of only six schools in Ohio to be named a 2010 Silver Medal School. Nationally, Silver Medal Schools comprise 2.5 percent of the 18,743 schools analyzed in the study.
Criteria used to judge schools include the degree to which they serve all students across different ability levels, academic performance as measured by state achievement tests, and the degree to which students are prepared for college as measured through Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses.

Dayton residents and businesses are invited to participate in a public discussion focused on conversion of vacant lots and properties into useful and attractive community assets.
The “Vacant to Vibrant” event is the first of several upcoming Dayton Beautiful Town Hall meetings and is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at the Dayton Convention Center (22 E. Fifth St.).
Session topics include maintenance and landscaping alternatives, homeowner land acquisition opportunities, and visioning new green spaces for neighborhoods. Admission is free, and passes for Transportation Center parking will be provided.
Future Dayton Beautiful Town Hall topics include “A Pedestrian- and Bicycle-Friendly Dayton” and “The Future of Historic Preservation.”
Strickland to visit Stivers on Thursday

DAYTON — Gov. Ted Strickland will visit Stivers School for the Arts on Thursday, Jan. 29, a day after his State of the State speech in which he is expected to lay out his plans for education reform and funding, a Dayton school official said.
Strickland is scheduled to tour Stivers at 1313 E. Fifth St. for 45 minutes beginning at 5 p.m., said Jill Moberley, spokeswoman for Dayton Public Schools. Strickland's office declined Tuesday to confirm the visit.
In December, Stivers made U.S. News & World Report's annual list of America's best public high schools, capturing a bronze award. It joined three other high schools in Montgomery County that made the list — Centerville, Oakwood and Dayton Early College Academy, a Dayton district-sponsored charter school developed in partnership with the University of Dayton.

Sen. Barack Obama will make a campaign swing through Dayton on Friday, July 11, his campaign announced today.
Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, will visit Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton for a town hall meeting on energy security.
Obama visited Zanesville earlier this month, and visited Columbus in June.
Stivers School for the Arts is located at 1313 East 5th St. Doors open for the event at 10 a.m. While the event is free and open to the public, tickets are required.
Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis, with two tickets available per person. To get two tickets, each person must turn in two names along with contact information.

Organizers had expected to draw around 600 homes into the event, Jones said. However, as of Wednesday, May 28, more than 550 homes had signed on and officials estimate the number of participating homes to climb to 1,000.
